A study on Pregnancy and Birth Interval

Abstract
This study was conducted from July 1973 to August 1973 in order to find the patterns of pregnancy and the birth intervals of women. Information for the statistics was gathered from 320 women who live in Ga-jo Do, Ko-je Kun, Kyung Sang Nam Do, and have experienced live births. The results obtained can be summarized as follows:
1. General Characteristics of Women
Women belonging to the 30-34 age group comprised 17.2% of the total number of women studied. The average age was 41.6 years.
40.3% of the women had graduated from primary school and educational level was lower than that of women in urban areas.
67.5% of those studied claimed no religion. The largest percentage of those who did claim a religion were Buddhists(16.6%).
Most of the women studied(41.6%) were engaged in farming and related work.
57.2% of the respondents were married between 20 and 24 years of age. The average age at marriage was 20.8 years.
58.4% of the respondents had been married 20 years or more, while the average duration of marital lives was 20.5 years.
51.8% of the women were in the low standard of living group.
At the present time, the nuclear family structure constitutes a majority of 72. 5%.
2. Pregnancy and Birth History
The average number of pregnancies was calculated to be 3.62 per woman, the average number of live births- 3.43 per woman and the average number of living children-3.38 per woman.
The number of induced abortions was calculated to be 23.7 out of every 1,000 births, the number of spontaneous abortions -13.7 out of every 1,000 births and the number of stillbirths-19.1 out of every 1,000 births. The total number of pregnancies wasted was 57.5 per 1,000 births.
Among the first pregnancies, premarital pregnancy comprised 7.0% of the total number of women studied. The average duration from marriage to the b~gihning of the first pregnancy was 23.4 months. By the current age of the women, the average 12-igth of the first pregnancy interval was 4.9 months in the 20-24 age group, 15.3 months in the 25-29 age group, 16.0 months in the 30-34 age group and 27.2 months in women 35 years of age or older.
By the age at marriage, the average interval of the first pregnancy was 23.7 months in those less than 2U, 19. 5 months in the 20-24 age group, and 28.9 months in those 25 or older.
By the duration of marital lives, the average interval of the first pregnancy was 5.8 months in those who had been married less than 5 years, 16.3 months in those who had been married between 5 and 9 years, and 25.8 months in those who had been married 10 years or more. The longer the duration of marital lives, the longer the interval of the first pregnancy.
3. Birth Interval
The average duration from marriage to the birth of the first child was 33.2 months.
By the current age of the women, the average duration was 14.1 months in the 20-24 age group, 24.9 months in the 25-29 age group, 25.4 months in the 30-34 age group, and 37.1 months in women 35 years of age or older.
By the age at marriage, the average interval was 38.5 months in the 20 years or younger, 29.1 months in the 20-24 age group and 38.3 months in the 25 years or older group.
By the duration of marital lives, the interval was 15.6 months in less than 5 years, 26. 1 months in 5-9 years, and 35.6 months in 10 years or more.
4. Intervals between Pregnancies
The total number of pregnancies experienced in 286 respondents was 847. The average pregnancy inte¡©rval was 36.9 months.
By the pregnancy order, the average interval between the first and second pregnancy was 38.3 months, the interval between the second and third pregnancy was 35.2 months, the interval between the third and fourth pregnancy was 38.0 months, and after the seventh pregnancy it was 36.6 months.
The rate of pregnancy in one year was decreased according to the older age at marriage.
5. Intervals between Births
The total number of births experienced in 254 respondents was 793. The average birth interval was 39.0 months which is about 2 months longer than the pregnancy interval.
By the birth order, the average birth interval between the first and second was 41.2 months, the int¡©erval between the second and third was 36.6 months, and the interval between the third and fourth was 41.3 months.
By the age of the women at the birth of a child, the interval was, in a period of 3 years, 30. 3% in those less than 20 years of age, 32.5% in the 20-24 age group. 34.2% in the 25-29 age group, and 33. 7% in those 35 years or older. A total of 33.2% in all respondents.
